Our Vision

When people face sin and suffering, the church is called to bring the hope and guidance found in God’s Word. That’s why SMCC partners with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC) to help equip and certify those called to care for others. This certification process is made up of three phases.

When people face sin and suffering, the church is called to bring the hope and guidance found in God’s Word. That’s why SMCC partners with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC) to help equip and certify those called to care for others. This certification process is made up of three phases.

Phase One

Fundamentals Course, Required Reading, and Counseling Observations
Completion of Phase 1 is split into three parts: our Fundamentals Course, Required Reading, and Counseling Observations.

The Fundamentals Course requires a $50 registration fee and will include 24 session videos, 24 written session summaries, and an end of course quiz.

After completing this course, you will have 1,000 pages of Required Reading that you can select from the ACBC approved reading list.

And finally, the Counseling Observations is where you will have the opportunity to learn from real-life counseling scenarios. These hours can be accomplished by video or through personally sitting in with a certified counselor. This is something that each individual must obtain on their own. Please reach out to us if you need assistance with setting this up.

Phase Two

ACBC Exams
Completion of Phase 2 includes taking two ACBC Exams: the Theology Exam & Counseling Exam. These exams are comprised of 44 essay-style questions. Each answer should be 1-1.5 pages long. You will complete these open-book tests at your own pace, then submit them to ACBC for grading.

We strongly recommend attending/listening to our Biblical Counseling Training as it helps and assists students going through these exams.

Phase Three

Supervised Counseling Sessions
Completion of Phase 3 is where you as the student will get hands on counseling experience.

You will select a fellow from a list provided to you upon completion of Phase 2. Once you have been paired with a fellow, you will then complete 50 sessions/hours of Supervised Counseling. This must be completed within one year. For more information click here!
